Since we've been having a discussion here about shipping dogs, I thought you all might be interested in this little snippet that appeared in USA Today:
"Many airlines might stop carrying pets if the government makes them report figures on how many animals they lose and how many die or are injured on their planes, an industry group says. The Federal Aviation Administration proposed the rule last fall to implement a law passed by Congress. The rule would require carriers to inspect pet cargo more closely and report monthly to the Department of Transportation any incident that leads to loss, injury or death of a pet. There are no industry figures. Some animal protection groups say that reporting standards are needed to at least give consumers information about an airline's record on handling animals."
If they're willing to just stop taking animals rather than give up the figures, it makes you wonder how many pets they've lost, maimed or killed over the years.

No insurance does not cover spay/neuter unless the dog has a medical reason to remove it's bits - i.e. testical cancer or ovarian cancer. It used to be illegal in Scandinavia to spay/neuter , not too long ago! There are no spay/neuter contracts in Sweden, I asked the SKK (Swedish Kennel Club) about that, as well as my breeder friends. They say they never could have one really either. There isn't pet overpopulation in Sweden as there is in USA, as the SKK says. Heather That's great to know ... Thanks Heather

I think Anders may be changing his mind about having a dog in Sweden.
We moved recently and moved in with a friend who has two bull terriors, a 4 year old male and a 3 month old female. Personally, I think they were cross-bred with goats.
In the first 24 hours we were there, the male ATE one of my leather shoe boots, laces and all (he did leave the high heel and sole behind) but everything else was gone. The female ate half of one of Anders' sheepskin bedroom slippers and spent 2 days pooping out bits of fleece. The male also stole Anders' leather manicure kit (a Christmas present last year) and ate the whole thing. However, he did spit out the clippers, file, scissors and tweezers. A day later, he barfed up the zipper too. The female then chewed the earphones off of my transcribing machine.
Their owner tells us that he has personally lost 2 watches, a tube of ear infection ointment, numerous cardboard boxes, and two plastic sprinkler heads.
On top of this, the female apparently believes that 4:45 a.m. is THE time to wake up, no matter how hard you exercise her, and her favorite past-time is barking, non-stop for 2 hours.
Heather, you're the resident dog expert here. Any idea how Swedes manage to have all kinds of dogs that don't bark? Our neighbors had a Dalmation AND a King Charles spaniel in a one-bedroom apartment below us and I think I heard a total of 2 barks during the 18 months they lived there.

Oh yes, a word for the wise: Never own anythign that poops larger than you do! These two bull terriors seem to produce enormous quantities several times a day. I miss little Maliq, our last resident dog, four pounds soaking wet and never passed anythign larger than a malted milk ball.

Heather ... livid means that one is beyond mad … meaning Carolyn & Anders are upset that these dogs ate their belongings.

Actually, I wasn't livid (well, maybe a little, 'cause they were new boots), but Anders was planning on tossing out the bedroom slippers anyway before we left and I was really worried about the manicure kit, since he (Cosmo) ate the zipper as well and I was worried about him having some internal injuries, but apparenly, his digestive tract is cast-iron and he also ended up puking up the zipper a few days later.
