2003-12-22 Permanent Residence Permit sticker valid until passport expires The Swedish Migration Board now simplifies the renewal procedure for holders of Permanent Residence Permits (PUT) in Sweden. The residence permit sticker in the passport no longer has to be renewed every third year. Instead the permanent residence permit is renewed when the passport holder renews his or her passport. Consequently the Migration Board will no longer send out reminders to renew the permit. The new procedure will be fully implemented April 15, 2004, but the Migration Board will cease to issue reminder letters to renew PUT-stickers from January 1, next year. From then onwards, the holder of a permanent residence permit will be responsible for remembering when to replace his or her permit. The permit will still be issued at the local Migration Board Office closest to where you live. In order to travel across the Swedish border and within the Schengen area, a foreign citizen must be able to show that he or she holds a valid residence permit in Sweden. There are also other reasons for always keeping a valid residence permit inserted in your passport. The new residence permit sticker will include space for the inclusion of biometric data such as a photograph or fingerprints in order to meet new EU security requirements. www.migrationsverket.se/english.html

Good to know, since my passport runs out in 2005, but my PUT is good until 2006. By that time, of course, I hope to have a Swedish passport instead, but I guess I have to have one go-round at the renewal process.
Do you just show up at Migrationsverket with old and new passports and a smile? No money this time at least, as I recall.

That is how I've been doing it ... with a tack! at the end. You know It's been so long since I/we started paper work for me to come & live here, that I would ill advice any newbie. My first year visa had 3 or 4 levels where we needed to be interveiwed ... this took place in the police's fika room in another small town ... we once forgot & the police just cruzed over & we had another fika.
