and here is a Festival I would love to attend. 1 Aug 2004 Medieval Festival Week For one week the old town of Visby on the island of Gotland goes back in time to the Middle Ages. Locals dress up in historic costumes, knights demonstrate their strength in jousting tournaments, a maiden is locked in a tower. Carnival atmosphere and festivities; a mixture of sobriety and merriment, education and carnival extravagance in a genuine medieval town. www.medeltidsveckan.com/english/

Maybe you and I should go, because my husband swears he couldn't be dragged, kicking and screaming, to something like that and besides, I already have the costumes!

Carolyn, I've been to Medieval Week at Visby and it rocks! I was a bit like Anders - I wanted to avoid it like the plague. I love medieval history and wanted to see Visby, but the thought of something like this just sounded awful. But we went with friends who really wanted to see it. Much to our surprise it was excellent. They have a website and you can see it's packed with information events and lots to see and do - catering to all tastes. The jousting was fun, the concerts (many free) were beautiful and the whole town turned out in medieval costumes was beautiful. They didn't dress in "costume shop" type of stuff, but as ordinary people of that time. We sailed there and stayed in the guest harbour, but you can also take a ferry (from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn) and stay in the many camping grounds. And Gotland is GREAT for cycling in case Anders gets sick of Visby. Absolutely recommended. I'll send you some of our photos to wet your appetite ;D
