For quite awhile now, most of this site has been down. Our original webmaster, Leslie, had too much to do in her life and couldn't keep up with this and the rest of the original bunch didn't have the technical skills (or time in some cases) to keep things going. Now I've been talking with Debbie here, who does have some knowledge (and lives with a man who will probably control the planet soon with his computer set-up and knowledge) and we're wanting to get ALL of PS active again, not just the Message Board. So what I'm looking for is suggestions. What would you like to see here again? We've already discussed the recipe section we had, as well as articles on food shopping here and what various things are called. We've also discussed a business type section, things like opening bank accounts, paying your bills on the internet by bank transfer, etc. Since the whole idea of this board is to help people get on with a good life in Sweden, we're not planning on concentrating on creating a strictly American enclave of people who would travel to Copenhagen for Kentucky Fried Chicken, for example, but more of a "you've moved to a foreign country, so let's help you find new things to enjoy and some positive reinforcement" type of stuff. All suggestions and comments will be welcomed and listened to, insofar as we can.

I think at one time we had conversions from the Imperial system to Metric.
Also, clothing, both men and women and bra sizes conversion and shoe sizes from the N. American sizes to Swedish/EU.
Oh, we also had some history about the founders like how we came to Sweden, and how we all met etc... I don't think that I had a picture though.
I am TEXT that this site will be up and moving again. It is such a bummer that it has "lied in waiting" for as long as it as. I don't know much about websites or HTML so I'm of no help.

I am TEXT? The one and only time I use the underline button that's what I get?! It was supposed to say, "I am THRILLED"... ha ha

And therein lies one of the major reasons we've been so slow updating and revising. We both have trouble with things like underling, how can we be expected to do more?

I don't know. I wish I knew more about HTML. I asked Anders and he doesn't know about it either. He's an IT guy so webpages isn't what he's good at. At least there's interest in bringing back this site!

Some of the ideas I've had so far is:
Under Foods, restaurant reviews and eating suggestions, not just for Stockholm, but around Sweden and even a section for other parts of Europe.
Under Taking Care of Business, things like starting a bank account, plus getting your proper I.D.s, taxes when you have work, paying bills via the internet. Things also like divorce, separation, property rights.
Under Travel, both stuff within Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.
I'd like a Family Section, where we can deal with matters like schooling, what to expect, any innoculations, barnbidrag, medical care for children, any special needs for kids. What happens with kids in the case of divorce, Hague Convention stuff.
I intend to put stuff on here for the older folks too. I'm getting up there and starting to be more concerned about medical care and pensions and what is required and also given to seniors. Wills and any medical power of attorney type stuff, if that exists here.
I'd like some more discussion too on the arts, things like great groups and musicians people have discovered here, maybe the club life, stuff with a more European flair.
An improved links section for sure.
I'd like to see this site be forward-looking at the life we have all chosen to live for love and make the most of it.
Any other suggestions, anybody?

There was some very useful info in Get It Out about our consumer rights, too!

Yes, Sabeine was going to further investigate and write more fully on that. That's the sort of stuff that I'd love to see here, advice on what can and can't be done legally. And I'd LOVE to see more participation from parents of children regarding schooling, health care and other issues contribute as well.

Maybe in the future I could write an article about child care here. I am starting a one year program Aug 16th and after that will become a pre-school teacher.
I worked as a pre-school teacher for 3 years (many years ago) so though I should have gone to the school here longer they factored in work experience and I got a shorter program.
I think it could be interesting to see how child care differs here, or maybe it doesn't I'll have to wait and see. At least I will be able to give some insight into rules, what can and cannot be done and so on.
I'm still checking on the consumer rights at stores. I was told that it is in all of Sweden, but these were from my co-workers so I am not sure if it is law or just their beliefs.

I think building a newer, improved site together is a really good thing. It's bothered me all along that it just seemed like a very few people were actually interested in coming here, posting and doing anything.
Jersey Girl, if you like, contact Debbie and see if she needs anything. I think we are going to eventually have to revamp the message board and I am definitely considering buying a domain name for this as well, but we're going to be moving ahead slowly, I think. We'll need to see how to attach the message board to the rest of the new site. Debbie is working with Lycos at the moment. As for me, I just appreciate, I don't have a CLUE how it functions.
Also Mimmi at this site, our resident Swedish pelargon expert, can do this kind of thing as well and has volunteered in the past.

Jersey Girl, That would be really helpful. Definitely PM Debbie and see. Your input would be very welcome!

re: consumer rights - we actually had a Konsumentrådgivare (consumer adviser) from the government's "Konsumenträtt" (something like America's Better Business Bureau, only with government backing and power to help fix bad situations) come speak at my SFI school. Unfortunately, I was about 1 month into my lessons and the lecture was for 4th-tier students, so even now some of my notes are hard to translate... I read Sabeine's post and wanted to add my notes, but they're not 100% complete and it was a lengthy post... but if you guys want it, I'd be happy to PM or post the information I DID glean from that presentation. re: suggestions How about a shopping section in general, which could include the consumer rights, but also have things like "converting sizes" for how to buy a bra or shirt or shoes when you only know your size in other lands' measurements. Also it would be neat to know where to go to get basic items. Someone warned me about not being able to buy Aspirin-type over-the-counter meds anywhere except for the apothecary, but someone else new to Sweden might go looking for basics they bought in say a 7-11 in the US and not know where to look here in Sweden. I love to write and if you guys want to dole out any assignments for researching or writing advice sections or any of that, let me know. I need projects to fill my time, need to improve my knowledge of my new home, and this seems like a wonderful revamp

Sounds like a winner, Vember, and once we get a little further along, I'll be glad to talk with you about articles.
You weren't around when the site used to be up and running. We did have a section with comparable clothing sizes, not only US-European, but British as well, since they differ. And also a discussion on ordering clothing from web catalogs and our experiences with that.
I believe we also had something regarding apoteket and where to get stuff, but the site has been down for 2 years now, so my memory fades.
