The first coupple of times I tried to upload an image it got smushed. The key is to right click on the image you want to use and check its dimensions. Then type in the same width and height in where it says "Custom Avatar" something under where you put the URL for the image in on the profile page.
So, if you wanted, for example, to use a LiveJournal user pic or something, that will work great, just make sure you set the width and height yourself. Otherwise it gets all smushed.
I think the images used here need to be under 100x100 pixels or so probably.
