Welcome Denise. Which part of Sweden will you be moving to? You'll find you need different tips for different areas of the country! If you have specific questions just ask. I have never been to Ireland but it's on my list of 'must see' places.

Hi there! Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I'm gonna be moving to Stockholm city. I was working in Sweden for a couple of weeks last year with my old company and met my boyfriend then. We've been travelling over and back since. It's gonna be nice to stay in one place for a while! Pam you should definitely go and see Ireland. It's a lovely place to visit. Well only 25 more days to go.....

Hi again everyone,
Well, I made the move to cold, cold Sweden. I'm settling in fine. Just gonna start SFI classes and continue looking for a job. If anyone knows of something I could do I'd be SO happy to hear from you. I have a science diploma but I'd be willing to give almost anything a go! ;D
I hope that everyone is having a great start to the new year!

Hi Denise! I also live in the Stockholm area, in Sundbyberg. Where are you? Taking SFI is a good way to start. You probably know by now that although most Swedes do speak English, it is preferred for you to learn Swedish, it certainly makes it easier to get a job. If you would consider it as a "starter" job, have you thought about working at a restaurant or hotel? There are plenty of both here in Stockholm. A restaurant called, O'Leary's comes to mind. I have been to 2 of their restaurants (I believe they have 5 here in Stockholm) and at both of those two places there were people that worked there that only spoke English. One was from Canada, the other from Australia. They could speak some basic Swedish words, however they asked for our order in English, and were relieved when I started to speak English with them. O'Leary's is owned by an American woman (with Irish roots) from Boston, and a Swedish man. It is a sports bar, and I think it is a fun atmosphere. They have a website, www.olearys.se I don't know if they are hiring, or if you are interested, but it might be a good first job. Otherwise there are hotels here to look into, Scandic Hotels, SAS Radisson, Shearaton, Hilton (at Slussen). My first job here was at Scandic hotel, I didn't speak any Swedish but started working serving conference lunches and dinners. The meals were pre-ordered, so we only had to serve it. There wasn't much dialogue between us and the guests. It wasn't my dream job, but it was a great first job, and I learned Swedish pretty fast, and met people that are now good friends.

Hej Sabeine, I'm in SpÄnga, just a 2 minute walk from the train. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I was actually thinking of O'Learys. I spotted it the last time I was in Texico. I think I'll give them a call. The hotels only hire through Arbetsförmedlingen and they haven't anything there at the mo. Well, back to trawling through the job sites, lexicon in hand.....
