Hi everyone, What a lovely, relaxed and very informative site. Well done! I'm Marie and I'm an Aussie (from Adelaide), who now lives in Nynäshamn, a lovely seaside town about 50kms (or should I say 5 miles ) south of Stockholm. So why this leap into the unknown? Yes as you may have already guessed it is (as always) about a man. A great Swedish man. I moved here in December 2000 and we married in May 2002. I love to sail and we spend a lot of time out in our lovely boat. I also love cooking and reading as well as surfing the net and chatting to people. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and being a part of this community. It's lovely to have a place to chat to people who are actually here in the same country. Now off to read the archives.....

G'day Marie, and welcome. Yeah, I think this is a pretty cool, laid back site.
I'm Carolyn, one of the literal oldies here (52), who also moved to Sweden in 2000 after marrying my Swede. We're normally located in Örebro, which is about 150 km west-southwest from Stockholm, but at the moment, we're finishing up a stay in the U.S., where I've been working for what seems like decades. Home again the end of March!
OOOOH, I just looked at your profile. Another one of us "mature" ladies making the move. I LOVE it.

Thankyou for the lovely welcome, Leslie, Carolyn and Natooke! I especially appreciate that Carolyn referred to me as "mature" rather than the far more accurate "old bag" ;D I have really enjoyed having a good look at the site and checking out the members and their home pages...yeah, I know, I'm SOOOOO nosey! I had no idea that there were so many of us here! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only "engelsk kvinna" in Sweden, because I am the sole native English-speaker in Nynäshamn. A group like this can make it less isolating. I just know you'll understand my stupid questions and laugh along with me as I tell you the latest embarassing thing I did/said because, chances are you have done it yourselves. I find that friends back home just "don't get it"!

Hi Anna, Nice to meet you. I lived in Stockholm (at Upplands-Väsby ) for the first six months after I arrived here in Sweden. I loathed the place! So, I looked for an apartment to buy in a better area. I'd almost settled on a nice place at Stuvsta, when we went sailing in the archipelago. Before that we had mostly sailed on Mälaren. Well, it was love at first sight for me. So we decided to move to Nynäshamn, as it was still on the pendeltåg..(the "slut station"...which still cracks me up every time I hear them say it) and yet on the coast with instant access to the Stockholm Archipelago. You can see it at www.nynashamn.se/turism/index.htm and check out the webcamera of the harbour. I think it's great here!

I know where it is. I went to Gotland a couple years ago, and the boats all leave from Nynäshamn.
I would like to live there. It is beautiful there. Unfortunately we can't move there right now. We have to stay in Stockholm a couple more years. This mainly due to my sambo's work. I work as well, (part time now) but that isn't so restricting. I am in school though and would like to finish that.
I agree with you on Upplands Väsby. It is not such a nice area. Some parts are, but I found it mostly to be drab.

Hey Aussie, we old biddies have to stick together. ;D
I don't know about the numbers for Australians, Kiwis and Canadians, but there are about 16,000 Americans resident in Sweden last count. Some of those are embassy and diplomatic and with American companies on "short-term" assignments, but lots of us are also love immigrants!
Check out under Get-Togethers here and read about our plans for the end of July.

Carolyn, Old biddies, indeed! ;D Well, compared to you Americans, we are a tiny presence in Sweden. According to the latest figures there are 1,400 Aussies in Sweden, with around half of them in Stockholm, then quite a few in Göteborg and Malmö, and the rest of us scattered throughout the country. Hmm, sounds a bit like a guerrilla infiltration There is an Aussie group who meet in Stockholm and Göteborg, but most of us just keep in touch on-line. And the occasional visit. I went to Ludvika (in Darlana) in January to spend the weekend with some Aussie friends who live there. I did see the get-together. But I have a little toy poodle who would not be welcome at a camping area! We are sailing around the coast to Norway this summer as well so I'm not sure where we'll be and when. But I'll keep my eye out for future dates. Thanks for that
