Hi All,
My best friend Jeremy is wanting to move here in a couple years and he said he'd like to know if they have SSI or SSD here in Sweden, and if he really needs a sponsor here in Sweden or can he just get a visa, resi permit and move here? Should he contact the consulate in NYC about this?

First of all, what is SSI or SSD (Social Security disability??). I don't think you can just up and move here without either a relationship residency permit or a previously approved job residency permit. What are his circumstances and why Sweden, just out of curiosity?

Yes he's handicapped. "physically disabled (2 steel rods in lower back for Scoliosis/Kyphosis) and mentally Disabled (learning disability and depression)." He is one of my best friends in Buffalo, we went to Middle and High school together. He wants to move to Sweden since he likes what I've told him about it and wants to start a new life Heather First of all, what is SSI or SSD (Social Security disability??). You were right, I just got off the phone with the NYC Consulate and he said that my friend would have to have a work or resi permit if he had a job or a family connection. Damn, would of been cool if he could (or any of my friends could) move here. Heather First of all, what is SSI or SSD (Social Security disability??). Hej, get him to come here for a holiday!!!! you dont need a visa for under 3 months (90 days) and its just to come for a spell... that way he has a chance to see how it is here, check out possibilities, etc etc etc,,,, and if destiny bekons him here...well we are all here and I sure bet most, if not all of us never ever gave sweden a second thought in our lives except for the Muppets Swedish chef ;D invite him fo a visit!! sttart with a first step... ciao... Just because I've been looking at my best options for relocation... he may be able to look into a student visa for something a little more long-term than a holiday. That could open doors up for internships, sponsorships and work visas as well. Most of the universities throughout Sweden offer the majority of their Masters programs in English and Some in Malmö and Gotenburg offer Bachelor's programs in English as well...
Just a thought.
