Should I stock up on shoes before I make my move? I wear a size 10-1/2 to 11 (American Sizes) or about a 43 or 44 in Skandinavian sizes. When shopping in Sweden, the only time I saw sizes that large were in Men's shoes. I have a difficult time enough finding shoes here at home.

In this case, buy American! Not only for size, but style. BUT I wouldn't buy too many heels, if you like wearing them. I brought over quite a few pairs of elegant shoes (as well as dresses). I think I've worn one pair once in all that time. I wear comfortable walking shoes, hiking shoes, tennis shoes and assorted boots all winter. Oh yeah, sandals in the summertime. I may have worn a nice dress 3 or 4 times. Sundresses, yes, "office" type dresses, nope. Cotton skirts are good and tops. And if you have long legs and are on the "generous" size and know where to find good pants, light and heavy, that fit you well, stock up. It's not that Swedish women aren't "generous", they are, but finding a good pair of fitted jeans or slacks, especially if you're tall, OY!

I agree about buying the shoes before you move, I have rarely seen a size larger than a 41 here for women. The average Swedish women's shoe size is a 37! I am surprised by this considering by how tall many of them are but this was what I read in a magazine here once.
About the clothes there are several stores here that have larger women's clothes as well a the regular sized clothes. I work part time on weekends at a store called Lindex that sells women's and childrens clothes. We have a specific line called, "Generous" and we sell jeans, pants, tops, sweaters, skirts, jackets and even have a new underwear line that just recently came out in the past few months. Our store is smaller so the selection is not a great but the larger stores in Stockholm city have much more to choose from. Hennes & Mauritz has a line called "B & B" they carry similar items such as pants, tops and such.

I'm sooooo glad I asked about the shoes! I own 3 pairs of heels, two which are work shoes (navy and black) with 2 inch heels and one pair of dressy black shoes. I will definitely start looking for bargains on walking shoes. I knew that clothes could potentially be a problem as I'm 5'8" and definitely in the "generous" size catagory. I've been looking for bargains on work clothes and summer clothes which is where I'm lacking. I'm set for fall and winter clothes with lots of sweaters and warm slacks. Thanks!

Let me SERIOUSLY recommend something to you. Check out your nearest REI store or other sporting goods store and get yourself a pair of SILK longjohns. You will nearly have a heart attack when you see what they cost, but they last forever and they are very warm and even more importantly, they're so thin you can wear them under all kinds of clothes without adding extra bulk. You can get the long legs or above the knee. The tops can be cut quite low or high neck, short or long sleeved. I spent $65 in 2000 when I moved to buy mine, they are still in good condition and I LOVE the luxury of having silk next to my skin when it's cold like hell outside!

Suzanne,
Definitely stock up on shoes. You will probably fit into a 42 (same as me), which are difficult at best to find for women. I wear tennis shoes most of the time and even have trouble finding a 42 in Men's, they are usually sold out.
I can help you with the larger size clothing. There is a store in Mellerud (a bit north of Trollhättan) called Blom's that sells larger sizes. We'll have to meet there sometime! I buy most of my clothes there.
