For those of you devoted to Mexican food and refritas (aka refried beans) or, like me, prefer pinto beans to kidney beans in your chili, I definitely suggest looking in your Middle Eastern stores here.
The other day, bibi and I were busy wandering around Ali Baba's in Örebro. Back in the back, where they keep the 50 kilo bags of rice and other bulk type things, as well as open bins of all kinds of lentils and beans, my eye fell on some suspiciously familiar beans. They had no label on the bin, but they were the familiar oval with pinkish-grey streaked with brownish dots or stripes, so I'd be willing to bet a bean burrito that they're pretty much the same bean.
And for those that are purists, I have seen packets with a pig picture on them marked Oster, which is basically lard, if you prefer frying your beans in the "real hard stuff".

When we had our "green grocer" here in town, I asked him to get me some pinto beans. Between the three of us (my husband is included in the mix), we figured out what I wanted and the next time he picked up supplies he got what were labeled Romano Beans. They looked very much like pinto beans, so I bought them and they worked great! They seemed to cook in less time than I remembered when I made refried beans in the States, which is fine with me! All the sooner I can eat them!
