Okay, I KNOW how temperamental these plants can be, positively shedding their leaves if you look at them wrong. However, my husband had this one ficus for nearly 20 years and the man we rented our apartment to didn't quite kill it, but my god, it looks pitiful. Out of three intertwined stems, we have one where there's still life hanging on, and after cutting away all the dead, dry branches, there are five where the poor dear is trying it's very best to survive.
Funnily enough, in the short time that we've been back home, it's almost as though it realizes that "Daddy's home", because it's putting out new leaves, but it looks so naked with most of the branches gone and all the leaves dead on the lower parts of the branches near the stem.
So tell me, how does one propagate a ficus? Do you take cuttings of leaves and put them in water to root, is it a dry rooting proposition? Is it by root division? I really want to save this tree for my husband.
The rest are pretty much lost, the two aloes that were older than my husband's kids, all of the geraniums, but they're cheap at the market, my pothos was looking pretty bad too, but it's recovering. You nearly have to put gasoline on those and set them on fire to kill them. One violet amazingly survived as well.
Any suggestions on saving this ficus?

Update on the ficus. I cut off all the really dead stuff, but the crown and three branches that had about 3 leaves each on them when we got home have burst into leafliness. It's so weird, because i woudl have sworn the ficus was a goner, but it's almost as if it knew that "papa" was home and all would be well. it still looks pretty pathetic, but there is a ton of new growth and I have a small piece in water, seeing if I can root it as well.

all is not lost, ...what you have done so far is perfect but the only thing you need to do now is to pot it into fresh bloomjord, potting mix....and feed it by either liquid feed that you mix when you water it or those little food sticks etc for potted plants. Ficus are temperamental in that they originate in temperate and tropical climates, so somewhere warm and sunny or in half sun positions are great. They like the warmth so will shed their leaves for *survival mode* due to...not enough water, drowning conditions with watering, or change in temperature..or with aging of leaves they turn yellow and drop off. Ficus are used in bonsai work so can live for decades... but for indoor potted plants repotting every third year is essential to looking fantastic. As they are used in fancy topiary work...you can cut them back often to get them to bush out... oh by the way, maybe it isnt papp the plant is happy to see, maybe just your green thumb!! all the best....
