Does anyone know when or how much you can trim roses? They have been beautiful but the old blossom's are dead and just hanging there. The man we bought our house from didn't leave instructions for the flowers, lol

I am probably comlpetely wrong, but I just take off the dead end and wait until early spring to cut the dead twigs away. But make sure you cover the roots before winter with some evergreen. They will appreciate the blanket for the cold!

Yes, deadhead (cut off) the old roses. I am not sure how you do it here in Sweden, but I used to do a preliminary prune in Oregon in the late fall, after a frost, and then prune again in the springtime. Here's a link for you to the Swedish Rose Society. I know you don't read Swedish yet, but perhaps your husband can have a look for advice on pruning there. www.svenskarosensallskapet.org/index.html

Clip at the nearest "elbow" under the dead blooms. In this heat you'll have lots more blooms after you take away the dead stuff. Are they regular rose bushes or mini roses? What color are they? My mother-in-law actually said out loud that it's *now acceptable* to have roses besides the red ones. She said they used to be considered tacky but many immigrants came and didn't give a hoot what everyone else thought, planted other colors and it caught on. I swear, it takes an official act of the government to get someone to make a change here!

What? Only have RED roses? Yeah, that is dumb. Is it your MIL that feels this way, or was it many?
My Aunt here has had many different colored roses for years. Yellow, Peach, White, Magenta etc... you get the point. But I do understand how many here will tell you how things are supposed to be. It's a bit different for us that come from "melting pot" countries where the only way things are supposed to be done, is the way that you want it.
