Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He attended Georgia Southwestern College, and Georgia Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1946. He also attended Union college where he completed his graduate work in nuclear physics. During his naval career he was a lieutenant on the Atlantic and Pacific fleets as a submariner. His father died in 1953, which is when he resigned from his naval commission. He married Rosalynn Smith on July 7, 1946, together they had four children, three boys and one girl. After his resignation he went back to the Plains and worked on his farm and ran a business called Carter’s Warehouse. He was very community orientated and served as the chairman for the county school board and was the first president of the Georgia Planning Association. He was on the Georgia Senate in 1962. In 1966, he lost the governor’s race, but won the next, becoming Georgia’s 76th governor. Candidacy for president was announced in 1974, and he was elected president on November 2, 1976. He served as president from 1977 to 1981, he was the nation’s 39th president. Carter was not only the president but he was also a professor at Emory University, author, and Sunday school teacher.

Jimmy Carter promotes the attack of social problems and poverty. He established The Carter Center as a non-profit organization that helps to promote the issues of public policy. President Carter is on the board of directors and is a regular volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity International foundation (Office of Public Information, The Carter Center, 1997).
Jimmy and Rosalynn established the Jimmy Carter Work Project, for Habitat for Humanity International, which is one week out of each year. It was started in September of 1984, when he led a group to New York City to renovate a six-story building, changing the lives of 19 families. Jimmy and Rosalynn give one week of their time and effort to help build houses for those in need. The project has a different location each year, this year it was in Houston, Texas. They built 100 houses this year and in 1999, they plan to build 250 houses in the Philippines. The project attracts volunteers from around the world.
Since leaving office Carter has gained quite a reputation as a “tireless champion for social justice. Carter says, we have become small players in an exciting global effort to alleviate the curse of homelessness. With our many new friends we have worked to raise funds, to publicize the good work of Habitat, to recruit other volunteers, to visit overseas projects and even build a few houses” (Habitat for Humantiy International, 1998). Indeed with the help of others and the Jimmy Carter Work Project, they have changed the homes and lives of many families across the world.

That is fantastic! He really is a figure Bush should be trying to emulate.
I am so happy that he is finally being recognized for his accomplishments. It seemed that others took credit for them and he never complained, just did more.
Fantastic!
