Once more I have to cheer the Swedish medical system! I had to fill a new prescription today and a drug that would have cost me over 600sek in the US cost me only 44sek! Wowza!! Not to mention a visit to a fertility specialist for just 120sek!

Well, even though I haven't had to use the medical system yet myself, other than for P-piller (birth control for those of you who don't know), I did love the fact that my visit to the barnmorska for the prescription was free and my pills cost me about $15 for a three-month supply, unlike the $15 a month I was paying in the States through Planned Parenthood.
I also have gotten notifications, although haven't gone for the tests yet, that I can have both a mammogram and my PAP test for a total payment by me of 50 SEK each, which is a little over 5 bucks a visit.
When Anders passed out from the pain pills he had been prescribed and hit his head, necessitating an ambulance, CAT scan and emergency room visit, our total cost was about 250 SEK or (back then) $25. Currently in New Mexico, even if you call the Fire Department paramedics to come get you, you're looking at a minimum of $150 for the ambulance ride alone, not to mention the cost for the CAT scan and emergency room, which last time I was there in '96, ran me $60 at the time just for the ER visit.

I agree Carolyn. My mom (if and when she gets out of the hospital) will have a fat bill to pay. Her insurance, Kaiser Permanente will pay for a lot, but her share will still be many thousand dollars.
One thing to remember here in Sweden though, we do pay for it in our taxes. It isn't free. Income, and sales tax and into the bulk of it. I'm not complaining, I just wanted to point that out.

I got three months of diabetic supplies plus a testing machine for $12. That was amazing and appreciated. This week I have had a falling down sinus infection and can't get an appointment. Also, I need to see a gynocologist for severe pains I've been having at the end of the month for four months now. This is trouble I've had before and can identify myself. The doctor gave me Naproxin Sodium....pms medicine, and no referal.

Pam,
Have you looked into the possiblilty of pelvic inflamatory disease? My sister had this and had severe pain in the abdominal area. It was later treated with medication, but before that it was painful (on/off) for many months.

Pam- Do you need a referral to a gyn in Sweden? I just called up Mama Mia in the city and made an appt for myself. Cost me the usual 120 SEK.

I only have my boyfriend's knowledge of the medical system and since he's never been to a gyno he thought of it as a specialist and that I'd have to be referred. I'll call around in the city and get an appointment. Thanks! It's not an infection. I had an ovarian cyst removed via the knife many years ago and every once in awhile the scar tissue does funny things. Funny like last time....it grew in such a way that my intestines were attached to my abdominal wall. Ouch! Plus I get cyst overload sometimes. After many years I know that if it's the kind of cysts that will go away on their own they will do so within three months. That's why I waited so long to ask. LOL Sorry if that was more info than anyone wanted to hear!

Just ask them when you call for the appt if you need a referral for that. I didn't know that specialists had to be referred. I have only been to the gyno and regular doc.
Good luck. Hope everything will be easily taken care of for you.

With having two C-sections here and my length of stay was 10 days with both children … We only paid for the rental of the bed… which if memory is correct was 50 sek a day.
Hope things are better Pam.
