Anders just informed me that on the flight between London and Sweden, I'm only allowed 44 pounds per suitcase, whereas the international flight allows me 70 pounds (I'm probably around 60 lbs). So it looks like I might end up mailing some stuff, and the heaviest stuff tends to be some foodstuffs I bought, as well as some old household goods.
Can you tell me when your families mail you "care packages" with your necessities of life, like Jello or whatever, what do they mark on the customs slip besides gift? Are you allowed to mark "food items"?

First question is...are you going to London or have a connecting flight to the US? If it is a connection flight you should have the 70 lbs as limit already from Sweden. If you are staying in London you have to send the stuff and just write food on it...specify if you want to, then they won't be interested in checking it...With Air France I was allowed to have 2 bags of 32kg each plus had to pay about 100 us for an extra 32kg bag. They were kind enough to weigh my 3 bags to see if the 3 bags didn't go over 64kg so they didn't have to charge me an extra fee.

I think normally I could have gotten by with the heavy bags if I was taking the same airline to Sweden, but I just booked United to London and am flying British Midlands from London to Stockholm. I just went ahead yesterday and threw my Christmas lights, some cooking stuff I still had here, some food and some old sweaters and jeans into a couple boxes and I'm going to mail them. I may still be over by a few pounds, but I will then just pack the excess in my husband's luggage when I get to London, since he's only flying with a carry-on anyway. It's just a hassle when you THINK you've got everything organized and ready, and you have to start over. I've already done my thinking for the year, apparently.

Hey Carolyn here's an idea... Have Anders take a couple of empty suitcases to London with him. You take full heavy suitcases from US to London and then split the stuff up into his two empties for the flight home. Glad to hear you'll be back soon and have work! ;D Maybe now we'll actually manage to meet up again
