It is very late Monday night and I can't sleep at all. Anders is on his way home from being in my hometown of San Diego, CA and I'm a worry wort about planes and such...

While Anders was in San Diego visting my family (I couldn't go with him because of school) he asked my Dad if it was alright with him to "pop the question" to me. I'm old enough (32) to make my own decisions and don't need my Dad's permission, but I was very glad that Anders did ask, it shows respect for my father. My Dad said yes. I'm not sure if there will be a wedding, it's just nice to know that my Dad approves. As much as I try to be a modern woman, I guess at heart I am a bit old fashioned, I would not marry someone that my family did not like. I told Anders 4 years ago, that if he wanted to pop the question to me someday, I would request that he would ask my Dad first. He thought it was outdated, but I'm glad that he respected my wishes in the end. It means a lot to me, and after having spoken with my Dad he respects Anders much more now because of it. I knew that about my Dad, which is the main reason why I wanted Anders to ask him first.

So who knows, I may be an engaged woman in the near future. It will be a first for me. I've never been engaged, married, had kids, or even lived with a man before Anders. I focused on moving out of my parents home when I was 17, and worked, worked, worked, and went to university and got a degree. Now I am at a point in my life where I am secure enough with myself, I've lived alone long enough in the past, to know who I am, and I am open to moving forward with this relationship,

Carolyn, how sweet of you. He hasn't asked me yet though. He's still on a plane in fact.
He doesn't know that I know that he asked my Dad, my father called me after he had taken Anders to the airport and told me. I don't know when Anders had planned to ask me, it could be tomorrow, or it could be next year for all I know. I think the reason Anders asked him now is because I had said that it is appropriate to ask in person, so he took the opportunity since he was already there. I can imagine that Anders was really nervous, my Dad said that Anders said "um" a lot.

I knew my Dad would say yes, Anders and I have been together for 4.5 years, and I've lived here for almost 3.5 years. He likes Anders. The first time he met him he sat Anders down and gave him the "what are your intentions?" speech. Anders was mortified and scared of my Dad for years after that. Now he likes him and respects him. The feelings are mutual. My Dad is probably also partial to the fact that Anders is Swedish since my Dad was too before he became an American citizen.

How exciting!! Let us know when he does pop the question! Since Carolyn has already asked if she can make your dress, I'll have to think of something else!

My hubby asked my Dad too. My Dad was quite flattered and thought it respectful. Old-fashioned isn't always bad. I wish we were more old-fashioned about many things.
