Wooo hooooo, our lake (Hjälmaren) is freezing over. We took a nice, brisk walk today down to the lake, about 10 minutes away, and there were already guys out there checking how far out the freezing was. It's still kind of dodgy where the river feeds into the lake and a couple other places where there's a current, but for the most part, people are already out there. I don't think I'm going to trust it JUST yet, since I tend to fall a lot, but I can't wait till around mid-November and we can go out and play on the ice.
Of course, this means going shopping for some skates AND ski pants (protect against getting wet when falling), but I haven't skated since I was about 12 years old.
Our kommun actually has a zamboni and when the ice gets thick enough, they go out several times a week and groom the lake. They also set up benches for changing shoes, places for fires, there's a building to go in to warm up and they set up a "track" of a sort. For a period of time during the winter, you can shop a punch card kind of thing and each time you make the circuit, you punch your card. It's some kind of fitness competition, and I don't know what one gets at the end, but it's kind of a good way of keeping track of how far you've skated and sort of an incentive to keep going as well.
Now once the ice is thick, I hope we get enough snow so that we can cross-country ski on the jogging track as well. We have a 15km one that is also groomed in good snow years and even has lighting along the track as well.
