It was kissekat who reminded me of this today. Soon, the lovely christmas markets are starting. I think nearly every kommun seems to have them, but some are really special. I wanted to post the ones around here that I've been to in the past. Perhaps others could add in the ones near them as well.
I live at Nynäshamn, so if you come down for that market, feel free to drop in for a warming glögg at our place. Just send a PM
Traditionell Julmarknad i Fiskehamnen, Nynäshamn
December 4th and 5th 11am to 4pm both days.
This is held in the fishing harbour and is a lovely, very traditional market with a good range of food, handcrafts, gifts and so on. It is a beautiful setting and a friendly, family atmosphere.
You can take a steam train or steam boat from Stockholm, too and make a real day out of it. For information about tickets, see Ångtåg for the train and Blidösund for the boat.
Well worth the trip!
Julmarknad - Lisö
This is at on December 4th and 5th at Blåklockan, just south of Nynäshamn. This has quality, handmade gifts in wood, silver, glass, ceramic och dried flowers.
Ösmo
December 18th, 10am to 5.30pm
This market is really different and held at Järnåldershuset. It is a real viking type of market - handcrafts in silver, god, leather och tin. Ideal if you are looking for something unique. The atmosphere is wonderful - music, food, drink as well as viking sports like ax throwing and archery plus pony rides. In the evening, there is also a traditional viking feast.
Landsorts Julmarknad
This is on the charming outer archipelago island of Öja on December 4th, from 11am to 5pm.
Again, mostly high class handmade gifts from local craftsmen. It is really beautiful work and the trip across to Öja is great. There is also a concert in the chapel at 2.30pm. To reach Öja, you get the train to Nynäshamn, a bus to Ankarudden on Torö, then the waxholmbolaget boat across to the island. The timetable for the boat is here (it's .pdf, so you need Acrobat Reader to see it)
Drottningholm Julmarknad
I went to this the first year I was in Sweden and it was so beautiful that I fell in love with the whole julmarknad concept immediately.
This market is on December 11th and 12th. There are lots of stalls, a Lucia parade (really wonderful!), warm glögg and heaps of goodies. This is a must do for us. There is some information about getting there at here We get the boat across from Stadshusbron (I think it's 110kr return).
Utö Julmarknad
This runs over 3 weekends. 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19 December. This is a small, but beautiful market held in the courtyard of Utö Värdshus, with local handcrafts, fish, fresh produce. The restaurant's julbord is well known all over Sweden (you really have to book early for a table here). You can reach Utö from Årsta via the Utö Rederi boat line.
And within Stockholm itself, don't forget there are julmarknad at Kungsträdgården on 26th – 28th November, 3rd – 5th, 10th – 22nd December, Gamla Stan every day from 27th November to 22nd December and Skansen on 27th-28th November, 4th-5th, 11th-12th December.
