How to grow garlic? Stick it in the ground, pointy end up, flat end where it connects with the rest of the clove down! A nearly problem-free plant to grow! My geraniums and fuschias have arrived, been repotted, pinched back where necessary and are just waiting for the last frost so they can go outside! The rest of the plants are throwing themselves from the seed trays and I need to prick out some this week-end and put in smaller pots to get a better root system going. Look out, summer, I'm ready for you!

;D My auriculas have finally sprouted, three of them! They were filthy expensive seeds and I was very put out that they weren't wanting to grow, but upon very close reading of very detailed instructions, I put the pot outside 2 weeks ago and 3 of them have showed up. Apparently, unlike most plants, they LOVE it shady and cold before they decide to grow. Well, we can definitely offer them both here at the moment on the balcony. It's grey today, unlike the past week.

I'm glad to get out in the garden too. I cleaned out, fertilized and mulched my favorite spot and the boys started a new bed for me yesterday. Natooke, plant the garlic amongst roses if you have them. They grow great together and the garlic protects the roses from bugs. I actually brought back corn seeds from America but don't know if I'll really try them. I sure do miss sweet, fresh corn.

Thanks to both of you about planting garlic ;D but when should i plant them ? NOW??? Pam we do have a new rose bush ;D will try good advice ... There must be a online chart for growing zones in Sweden. There is always a differance between Kalmar & us. We make our own multch since Peter has access to many sawmills so he brings woodchips & bark... Tip that has helped ... I posted this here a while ago. Pick pine cones and place them in that flower bed you don't like the neighbour cat to peeeeee in ... they hate the feel under their butt. What kind of window box flowers do you like or plant? I love hanging verbina.

I like hanging Petunias for window boxes...and I like Petunias in my flower bed. Did I mention that I like Petunias?? In Tennessee they were one of the few flowers that could stand full sun without frying around the edges. I haven't tried pinecones but once planted cactus in a flower bed to keep the dogs out.....the dogs ate the cactus and laid in the freshly dug hole. Not sure about when to plant garlic but will check.

I've started planting my hanging ampules and I move them outside into this glorious warmth and sunshine during the day to get them used to things easily. I won't hang them out until around the 1st of June, though. I've got one large ampule that I planted with a rosebud geranium in the middle and four fuschias around the edges. The other ampule has got 2 hanging pelargons in it, one deep purple and the other one pale pink. In one of my window boxes, I'm going to be planting also a blend of pelargons, fuschias (at the edges to hang, I hope, and probably some alyssum as kind of a ground cover. The nice thing about almost ALL pelargons is that they LOVE heat and sun, especially the scented leaf ones. You do have to be careful about the rosebud (rosenknopp) ones or the double flowered ones, because if they get rained on, the flowers can mold and leave the plant open for disease, but we have a covered balcony, so .... I've also got started in little pots some morning glories (vinda) and calendulas (ringblomma), and I bought this neat little trellis kind of thing that you can put in pots and climbing plants can work their way up it. You can add on too for the real climbers. I've got 2 dahlias started in LARGE pots indoors, and I'm expecting any week now some angel trumpet sticklingar (shoots) to go in other large pots and some day lilies. I started other things, like poppies, but some of them don't seem to be doing too well, once they put in an initial appearance, so we'll see if they last until planting out time. Some things a person can grow, some things they can't!

I checked garlic in my Swedish Trädgård book and it warns to NOT plant in fall because the bulbs will rot but doesn't mention when you should plant them. I'm guessing whenever it's safe to plant other bulbs in your area. Sorry I can't be more help.

My dear husband came back with a green garbage bag full of pine cones from France.... these suckers are huge & now are in one of our flower beds ... they look awesome placed with the stones & soon plants. I'm waiting for my bark to do my multch. In the next few days I'll be planting garlic around the rose bush ;D In the last few years we've had no luck with clematis. Last year we took away the earth & replaced it with better earth & bought a new one. So lets hope & pry it does better ... any hints in how to keep one from dying on us.

I've been busy putting out the bark under all our bushes & some of the flower beds .... since we have a double lot we're trying to keep a no weed zone. Pam remember last summer I took you out back behind our barn ... to show you a climbing plant ? You nore I could name it ... If you like this fall I'll send you a few seeds so that you (or anyone else) can grow. The seeds were given to me by my sister in-law a few years back & since we're visiting I'll make sure I get the name of it.
