Congrats on your success Heather! Hopefully everyone trying the Atkins diet has checked with their doctors to be sure that the diet is safe for them. I always thought Dr. Atkins was on to something but I honestly never had the willpower to make such drastic changes in my diet.
I've lost 38.5 Kg since December using a "lower" carb, "lower" fat diet. My doctor recommended against Atkins because given that I am Type II Diabetic, whenever my body feels I don't get enough carbs, my liver produces glucose for me. They also told me that the fats which are ok in the Atkins diet are a no-no for diabetics due to the increased risks for heart disease.
If Atkins doesn't work for someone, then they should try reducing their carbohydrates. I have about 140 carbohydrates a day (which must sound astronomical to the real low-carb dieters) which includes pizza, pasta, rice, bread M & M's, milk, gravy, potatoes, chocolate cake and coffee. I just don't have them all at once or in one day.
There are several books out there about low carbing such as the "Carbohydrate Addicts" and "Sugar Busters" books people might find interesting. The important thing is to find those safe eating habits that you can live with for the rest of your life. It may take me another couple of years to lose all the weight I want to lose but I know with my lifestyle change, I'll never have to worry about gaining it back. My sister-in-law has done well on the Atkins diet, making her goal of a 30 lb weight loss. Her struggle now is keeping it off.
Best of luck!

Hi everybody especially Heather! Its my first time here. Anyway, I read what you guys wrote about Atkins and am very interested in it (frankly I heard about it for the first time here). I've checked it out at atkins website but didn't quite understand it. Can anyone tell me some more informations what it is. Is it pills or just recipes? Thank you in advance. PiM

Hi Pim,
Atkins is a low/controlled carbohydrate diet. You cut out sugar, flour (bread), pasta, potatoes, rice... and eat lots of veggies and protien (meat, fowl, eggs, cheese). No pills, no frills. hehe ;D Just wholesome delish eating!
Thanks for visiting my site!

Heather!! How is it going for you? I did Atkins for some time and had success then turned to a controlled carb (not Atkins) where I cut out sugar, flour, starch. Sadly, do to some bad timing and emotional events I let myself get off of it. I started it again this past Saturday and so far so good. I feel I am on the right road again.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother Heather !
About the Atkins diet, I've been trying to decrease my fast carb intake the past week or two, I can't cut them out completely since I love bread wayyy to much... But I hardly eat any potatoes, rice or pasta anymore. When my boyfriend has potato salad, mashed potatoes or pasta with his chicken or whatever for dinner, I have veggied and cottage cheese with my meat instead. I think it's working, my jeans are a little easier to button up ;D
I looked at the Atkins site because I was hoping to find a list of fruits and veggies you're not supposed to eat but couldn't find one. Do you know ?

Oh yes, you can have them, but not cooked as they are high even on the GI scale. 1 carrot av. size is 7g of carbs. The list is a starter point, you have more things you can eat during each stage of atkins Thanks ! I'm sorry that carrots aren't on the list, I love carrotts !!!
